2B Leesville Daily Leader Leesville La' riday Jan 14 1994 Tonya bodyguard and another man arrested PORTLAND Ore (AP) Tonya bodyguard and a Phoenix man were arrested Thursday and charged with conspi racy in the attack on Olympic figure skating rival Nancy Kerrigan Bodyguard Shawn Eric Eckardt 26 and Derrick Brian Smith 29 were arrested in Portland according to Michael Schrunk Multnomah County district attorney Smith a former resident of Portland moved to Phoenix about five months ago Schrunk said They were expected to be booked Thursday night The arrests were announced after two days of confusion and speculation over the role of Harding and her ex husband Jeff Gillooly in the Jan 6 attack that left Kerrigan unable to compete in last US igure Skating Championships Harding won the championships qualifying for the Olympic team Kerrigan was also named to the team even though her injury forced her to withdraw from the competition Eckardt told authorities that Gillooly from whom Harding was divorced last year asked him to arrange the attack The Oregonian newspaper reported Thursday in a copyright story citing unidentified law enforcement sources There was no indication that Harding was involved in plan ning the attack authorities said despite a report by Boston TV station WCVB that a sealed warrant contained her name Eckardt handcuffed and wearing a green jacket and blue jeans was brought to the jail in an unmarked car He answer questions shouted to him by reporters gathered in the tunnel to the jail He was escorted to the jail booking area Smith was expected to
