and the late Shersportsman. the government the buck concerning the ridiculous delays governing the issuand renewal Fire Arm Identification Cards (FID), and License Carry handguns (LTC), and others avoid the issue hiding and failto take a stand, Brewer is working on a measure that would make the FID or LTC be for life, or as long as the laws were followed and the privilege was not revoked or suspended. Sportsmen have been fed a diet of gobbledygook and hypocrisy concerning the legal use of guns for hunting, shooting and protection, and few have stepped forward for law abiding sportsmen and shooters. The Gun Owners Action League reported the Brewer bill does not lower the cost of the FID or LTC, but that it would be a one-time fee, as well as usage issuance for life, with the exception of cases where they were revoked or suspended. The new bill has no number assigned as yet but is entitled "An Act Providing for Better Management for the Issuance of Firearm Licenses." tad can not stress enough that sportsmen stand alongside Brewer.

Contact your state senator and representative, and back the measure. The issue goes far beyond a licensing one. It is an issue over whether government can take your rights and freedom away on what amounts to a whim. How often are shooters, hunters and those who want to protect their homes and their family lumped into statistics with law breakers, often dangerous ones. More and more officials are using the term, citing the number of "guns taken off the street." This statistic would be fine if it talked about the guns taken from felons.

I fear it includes licensed guns that have disappeared from the hands of the good guys because of the difficulty of FID or LTC renewals and issuance. The law abiding citizen just throws up his hands and gives up. I personally do not know the words, "I give up," words that shouldn't be in anyone's vocabulary. GOAL will keep us posted on who joins the backing of the bill. Sherm Lowell was a quiet, lowkey hero to me, a big man who walked humbly but with a great sense of humor and dedication.

Having great admiration for the man, I often wondered if others understood the great qualities of such a quiet person. I guess others did. I met Sherm through the New England Outdoor Writers Association, which I headed a couple times and through the late outdoor writer Stan Berchulski, who cautioned me to be careful and to keep an eye on him as he would eat everyone's sandwich, including the bags they came in. Sherm was an outdoor writer and proud of it. About the someone else who recognized Sherm; it was fellow outdoor writer Carl Braun, who passed away earlier this year.

Braun was co-publisher of the Windsor (Vt.) Chronicle, outdoor editor for the Claremont Eagle Times, a teacher and coach, and much more. He was a graduate of Deerfield Academy, Dartmouth College, University of Pennsylvania Law School and the University of Vermont Graduate School. Carl was a firm believer that outdoor writers had a duty to protect wildlife, habitat, and the very survival of the earth by being watch dogs. He firmly believed in the lawful rights of sportsmen within the bounds of respecting the usage of the earth and its animals. His ashes were spread, along with his dog Lotti, in his favorite fishing waters of Lake Champlain.

He left his camp there to outdoor friends who visited him there. Carl also left to the New England Outdoor Writers Association to establish a writers scholarship in Sherman Lowell's name. He understood as many of us did, that when Sherm exclaimed, "Fantastic!" "Unreal!" about nature that he was singing a joy song to living, a song he hoped everyone could enjoy -the beauty of a wildflower, a trickling stream, a majestic whitetail buck, a brightly colored brook trout, the colors of fall, discovering wild mushrooms, the great feeling of eating a corned beef with mustard on rye beneath the shade of a giant oak All outdoors DOG RACING HINSDALE GREYHOUND PARK Hinsdale Results Saturday Afternoon 1st, 1650 Feet Grade B. 8-C's Chico Miss 21.60 21.80 5.00 6-OHK Reno 9.40 3.60 1-Sty Hal 2.40 QU (6-8) $6.00 TR (8-6-1) 762.00 2nd, 1650 Fect Grade 2-Oakland Detonate 6.20 3.40 3.00 3-Hank Hm 13.20 6.60 8-Iza Brush Baby 4.20 QU (2-3) 26.80 TR (2-3-8) 219.20 DD (8-2) 139.80 3rd, 1650 Feet Grade 8-Silent Stricker. 12.60 5.40 2.80 5-Solas Dennis 3.00 2.40 7-Princess Rhea 3 3.20 QU (5-8) 11.80 TR (8-5-7) 155.20 4th- 1650 Feet Grade 6-Nodak New Tears 27.20 21.40 9.00 3- Jesse's Wag 9.40 6.40 1-M's Johnbow 3.40 QU (3-6) 271.80 TR (6-3-1) 2287.80 5th, 1650 Feet Grade 7-Blazing Pioneer 8.80 6.40 4.00 1-LPD Champ 4.40 3.00 6-AD's Ferrari 2.60 QU (1-7) 26.40 TR (7-1-6) 112.40 6th, 1980 Feet Grade 1-C's Chico Waiver 4.80 3.80 3.40 2-M's Santa 3.60 4.00 4-Pat Ulterly 4.80 QU (1-2) 19.00 TR (1-2-4) 179.20 7th, 1650 Feet Grade 7-M's Flag Raiser 16.80 5.20 4.20 6-Far From Normal 5.00 4.60 3-Blazing Danielle 4.00 QU (6-7) 52.00 TR (7-6-3) 1235.00 8th, 1650 Feet Grade 7-BG's Lisie 6.80 7.40 4.00 2-Jahoda's Oswald 5.80 4.80 8-Rebuff 2.80 QU (2-7) 24.60 TR (7-2-8) 141.80 9th, 1650 Feet Grade 4-GF War Admiral 8.20 5.20 2.80 7-U Too Wise Angei 5.60 3.60 5-Bud Eider 5.00 QU (4-7) 11.60 TR (4-7-5) 164.60 10th, 1650 Feet Grade 8-OHK Savannah 10.60 5.40 4.60 3-Thirty Ounce 5.40 4.20 6-Raider Stunt 5.40 QU (3-8) 29.60 TR (8-3-6) 536.80 11th, 1650 Feet Grade 3-Angus Lea 12.60 21.80 4.60 4-Mescal 8.00 3.40 1-Legs Whoopie 3.00 QU (3-4) 98.60 TT (3-4-All) 155.60 12th, 1980 Feet Grade 5-Pat Funds 7.00 3.80 4.20 1-Fine Lee 19.40 17.80 6-Pat Mrs.

allowing a run in 1904. ance of to just by ing deep in the woods. Sherm has one sister, Dianna, who is an invalid, according to his daughter Trudy Shelley of Phoenix. She said, "Dad, declaring 'She will not be assumed her total care, when many a man would have run from such a task, until her death." "He was gentle," she said, "but an old photo of when he played football for Machias, Maine, High School, showed two things. How little padding they wore and that the game field they played on was nothing more than a field of gravel." Sherm's mobility wasn't 100 percent.

He was seriously injured when working on a soda machine that nearly electrocuted him. The voltage broke his shoulder and then exited through his leg, doing serious damLarry Fountain of Fountain Plating, a fellow outdoor writer, hosted Sherm on many fishing and hunting outings. And like me, often spent some time on his knees helping Sherm on with his socks and hunting boots. And felt as I did that this wasn't a menial task. It was a true privilege.

When you looked at his 6-foot-3 frame you wondered at the workings of the world that would make a man so gentle and generous. He appreciated life at every level. I remember one time we put on a filet mignon feast at our hunting camp, a rarity, and he termed it "Unreal." Then there was the time Larry, Sherm, my son Doug and I were fishing Lake Champlain and we had forgotten to bring our food supply, but that I had some baloney and a couple slices of bread tucked away in my pack for a rainy day, and we shared it on this sunny day. Sherm informed us the baloney and mustard was, "Incredible! Fit for a king." 4 The homage we paid to Sherm was the usual backdoor homage, back handed that outdoor writers give to each other when you admire them: And he deserved it. Hadn't he and Stan Berchulski discovered me sleeping on a very special deer stand, on a very cold day? It was a decrepit outhouse that survived after the old abandoned farmhouse deep in overgrown woods had lost its battle.

The two rascals had quietly closed the door, tied it shut, then managed to have Stanley blow smoke from one of his old stink-cigars through a knothole in the outhouse and yell "Fire!" Then they said they wouldn't let me out until I said, "Pretty please, with sugar on it." Which they got. Otherwise my bones would still be sitting in that noble structure, long bow still in hand. But then, in the words of old mystery writer Mickey Spillaine, "Vengeance Was Mine." I'll get into my task of evening the score with Stanley in a future column, but here is how I struck at Sherm, with Stanley's help. We were tenting deep in the woods on this particular bow hunt and Stan and the boys were brewing up a broth of fresh vegetables and venison, a wonderful witches brew I call "Salivation Soup." After closeting with Stanley we decided that just before the "incredible" meal was to be served, I would declare that it was too late, that I had an appointment back home, and would have to leave that very moment, rather than the next day." I was transporting Sherm at the time and he would have to leave with me, before we ate. I saw his lower lip and jaw quiver ever so slightly.

And I didn't know whether I could go through with it. But I did, and as I. drove off with Sherm, I looked backward and said, "This is one of the most difficult times of my life." I couldn't look at Sherm. But after a mile of driving my old four-wheel out of the woods, I made a U-turn and returned to our tent camp, where steaming heaped bowls of salivation stew waited in dishes a- for us. Sherm smiled and said, "Thank you" first, for if anything, he was the consummate gentleman, and then after declaring "Unreal.

Fantastic," dug in like a young piglet discovering his first truffles beneath the leaves. And to swipe a phrase from Sherm, "Incredible!" this donation of $220,000 to a scholarship in memory of just an every day man that managed to stand tall. Frank Sousa can be reached at or P.O.
