Smiley, 64 RAPHINE Samuel Mar- tain Smiley, of 4444 Brownsburg Turnpike, died Wednesday (July 5, 2006) at his home. He was born March 25, 1942, at Brownsburg, to James D. and Willie (Fox) Smiley. He had been a dairy farmer.

Mr. Smiley was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth F. Smiley. Survivors include his wife, Delois W. Smiley; two sons, Andrew L.

Smiley of South Hill and Jason M. Smiley of Verona; three brothers, James D. Smiley of Verona, Wallace W. Smiley of Staunton and Joe B. Smiley of Bustleburg; and five sisters, Alice Shull of Fairfield and Maxine Nutty, Betty Huffman, Patsy Crosby and Phyllis Gibson of Staunton.

Beck, 94 ROANOKE Ruby (Michael) Beck, formerly of Staunton, died Monday (July 3, 2006). She was born March 18, 1912, at Staunton, to Charles Edward and Mary (Lindamood) Michael. Mrs. Beck was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Eston, Harry and William Michael; three sisters, Leta Whitlock, Hilda Wright and Edith Carr; and her husband, Robert Marshall Beck. Survivors include a daughter, Judith Simmons of Moneta.

19, 1916, at Harrisonburg, to Daniel Martin and Barbara Shadwell Phalen. She was a retired journalist, a teacher, former mayor of the city of Staunton, and she retired from Mary Baldwin College. Mrs. Lescure was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Waller C. Lescure.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Burnley of Roanoke, Elisabeth Bohnengel of Sylvania, Ohio, and Barbara Stirewalt of New Paltz, N.Y.; and a son, William Lescure of Albuquerque, N.M. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Burial will be at Thornrose Cemetery.

Hess, 79 BRIDGEWATER Martin David "Shorty" Hess died Friday (July 7, 2006) at his home. He was born Oct. 28, 1926, at Augusta County, to Albert David and Eliza Virginia (Eavers) Hess. He had worked as a farmer, and he had been employed by Westinghouse, Verona, for Greyhound bus terminal, Harrisonburg, and for Michael Construction Company, Mount Solon. Mr.

Hess was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Beulah Fay (Simmons) Hess; a stepdaughter, Juanita Dove of Singers Glen; and a stepson, Allen Curry of New Market. Services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Spring Creek Church of the Nazarene. Burial will be at Sangerville Church of the Brethren Cemetery.
