I made it but left out the canned chicken I don't like combining beef with chicken and I hate canned chicken. That being said, with the chicken left out I loved it.

Hi , really like your yummy things. Yours are healthy also. Share one more. A guy went hunting with a hunting group of guys each one cooking each night. He was to fix chili but forgot a few things. He went ended up browning hamburger meat with onions.Poured in kidney beans. He saw a large bottle of Kraft Spicy BBQ Sauce and poured in. Put on low in a 6 qt crock. Put on high for one hour then turned on low.

They all left coming back 5 hours later rain soaked , tired and starving. Smelled chili before hitting cabin door. Least to say none left. He made it for us at work on the grave yard shift...delicious! I made at home only adding diced tomatoes , garlic powder. Had no peppers at the time but family LOVED it. They decided they liked it better than my regular. Been cooking for 15 years now. That one bottle of BBQ Sauce is ready made , quick ready to go after meat n onions browned. Just saying even left meat off adding mushrooms and was even healthier for us all. Give a try. Happy Thanksgiving 2017 to all. Kat

FAQs

Should liquid cover stew in crock pot? ›

Water or liquid is necessary to create steam. When cooking meat or poultry, the water or liquid level should cover the ingredients to ensure effective heat transfer throughout the crock. Some manufacturers of slow cookers recommend adding liquid to fill the stoneware 1/2 to 3/4 full.

Can you cook beef stew too long in slow cooker? ›

Yes, you can overcook beef stew and other dishes. The recipe will indicate the preferred time, and while one can go over that, it shouldn't be by too much. One hour isn't likely to make a difference for beef stew. Three hours would.

How long does it take for stew meat to get tender in the crock pot? ›

Cook it on low.

While many slow cooker recipes can be made on high for 3-4 hours, I highly recommend cooking this beef stew on low for the full 7-8 hours. This will ensure that the beef gets nice and tender.

Can I leave stew in the crockpot overnight? ›

The short answer: Yes. slow cookers are made to cook food for extensive periods of time (some can be left up to 24 hours). But, of course, follow safe practices outlined in your instruction manual, and keep the appliance on low or warm, as opposed to high, overnight.

Do potatoes go on top or bottom of meat in crockpot? ›

Place firm, slow-cooking root vegetables like potatoes and carrots at the bottom of the crock and pile the meat on top. Set the heat level: A general rule of thumb is that cooking on the low setting (170 degrees F for most models) takes about twice as long as cooking on high (280 degrees F on most models).

Do you have to brown stew meat before putting in crock pot? ›

"Browning, or caramelizing, meat before putting it into a slow cooker isn't 100 percent necessary, but it is well worth the effort for the most flavorful and full-bodied end result," he says. "The caramelized surface of the meat will lend rich flavor and color to the finished dish."

What gives beef stew the best flavor? ›

Add spices such as turmeric, coriander and cumin at the early stage of cooking, when you are frying onions and garlic, to enhance the taste of the beef stew. Fresh herbs like coriander and bay leaves also contribute a distinct flavour without making the dish too spicy for the younger members of the family.

Is 4 hours on high the same as 8 hours on low in a slow cooker? ›

The difference between "High" and "Low" on slow cookers seems to differ with every brand and model. One thing that is consistent, though, is that food takes seven to eight hours to reach a simmer point (around 210°) on low; versus three to four hours on high.

Why is my beef still tough after 8 hours in the slow cooker? ›

The meat was overcooked: Slow cookers are known for their ability to tenderize meat, but if the meat is cooked for too long, it can become overcooked and tough. It's important to follow the recommended cooking time for your recipe to ensure that the meat is cooked to the correct doneness.

Is it better to cook stew on low or high? ›

Chuck meat is your best bet for beef stew, but it's also a pretty tough cut so it needs time to break down and become tender. Rush the cooking process and the beef will be tough and chewy. Follow this tip: For really tender meat, cook the stew low and slow, for approximately two hours.

Can I put raw beef straight into a slow cooker? ›

Yes, you most certainly can cook raw meat in the slow cooker! You put it in “cold”, with whatever liquid your recipe calls for, turn it on either “low” or “high” depending on your recipe (I usually start it on “high” for a couple hours, then turn it to “low”), and in 6–7–8 hours, it's now COOKED meat!

Is stew left out overnight still good? ›

If you reheat food that was forgotten on the counter overnight or was left out all day, will it be safe to eat? TWO HOURS is the MAXIMUM time perishable foods should be at room temperature (ONE HOUR at temperatures 90 degrees F and higher). This INCLUDES the time they're on the table during your meal.

Does food in crock pot have to be covered with liquid? ›

The meat will produce a little bit of liquid, but not enough - at least I don't think so. You don't have to add a lot of liquid - you don't even have to cover the meat with liquid - but you do need at least some. Otherwise, you'll just end up with cooked meat, not stew.

Does water need to cover in a stew? ›

For stews that will be simmered on the stove or in the oven, you'll want enough liquid to cover the ingredients in the pot by about an inch. If preparing in a slow-cooker or multi-cooker, you can add less liquid since the tight seal on the lid reduces evaporation.

Does all food need to be covered in liquid in slow cooker? ›

A slow cooker does not need any liquid added at the beginning of the cooking process, because it will generate steam, which will become liquid in the bowl. For recipes that use liquid, and have not been written specifically for a slow cooker it make sense to reduce the amount of liquid by half.

Does taking the lid off a slow cooker thicken the sauce? ›

Take the lid off

Place the cooker on a high setting, and open the lid for 30-45 minutes to let excess moisture cook off. The liquid will reduce, leaving you with a thick and delicious gravy or sauce. (Tip: This trick can also be applied for thickening stews, or when you've accidentally added too much liquid.)
