Delicious air fryer stuffed mushrooms with cream cheese, sour cream, and garlic then topped with cheddar and chives. They’re a delicious appetizer or side dish!

Easy Air Fryer Stuffed Mushrooms (1)

I normally prepare stuffed mushrooms in the oven, but this time I already had beef roasting so this was the perfect opportunity to use the air fryer.

The best part about air frying is it requiresnopreheating for this recipe. The air fryer gets hot so quickly.

My family and I love making stuffed mushrooms because they’re the perfect appetizer to add to our meals and only take a handful of ingredients to make.

This also happens to be a low-carb stuffed mushroom recipe and falls in line with the keto diet.

Of all the recipes, these are the best stuffed mushrooms I’ve had. Serve them at your next party because they are a real crowd-pleaser, especially for those game days!

Ingredients for Air Fryer Stuffed Mushrooms

  • Whole Cremini, Baby Bellas, or White Button Mushrooms (a personal favorite)
  • Cream Cheese
  • Sour Cream
  • Shredded Cheddar Cheese
  • Garlic Powder
  • Salt
  • Black Pepper
  • Chives

What Type of Mushrooms Should I Use

For this air fryer mushroom recipe, smaller mushrooms were used as opposed to larger full-sized portobello mushrooms.

My local grocery store happens to sell two types that work well for this and that’s the white button mushrooms and the baby portabella mushrooms. Cremini mushrooms would also work.

How to Clean Mushrooms

If you are planning to cook the mushrooms right away, rinsing them under lukewarm water is great for cleaning them.

However, if you do not plan on cooking them right away they will become slimy after being rinsed with water. In that case, use a damp paper towel to remove dirt and debris.

How to Make Air Fryer Stuffed Mushrooms

  • Clean the white button or baby bella mushrooms of any debris and remove the mushroom stems. I do so by simply popping the stem off. If anything is left inside the cap it’s easy to pull out. Discard the stems or use them in acreamy mushroom sauce for steak.

  • Mix together cream cheese, sour cream, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a medium bowl.

  • Spoon the cream cheese mixture into the “well” of each mushroom cap. Top each with shredded cheddar cheese and chives.
  • Tip: I’ve found the easiest way is by placing the cheese in a shallow dish and pressing each mushroom cap into the cheese to stick to the cream cheese center.

  • Place a single layer of mushrooms in the basket.
  • Set the temperature to 370 degrees and cook for 4-6 minutes until the top of the cheese is golden brown.

Variations

My air fryer stuffed mushroom recipe is very simplified and easy, but sometimes you may want extra flavor or texture.

To get more flavor try these different fillings:

  • Spinach and Parmesan Cheese
    • Remove the stems from the mushrooms and finely chop them.
    • Sauté the chopped stems with garlic and onions until softened.
    • Mix the sautéed mixture with cooked spinach, breadcrumbs, grated parmesan cheese, and a bit of cream cheese.
    • Stuff the mushroom caps with the mixture and bake until golden and bubbly.
  • Bacon & Blue Cheese
    • Cook bacon until crispy, then crumble it.
    • In a bowl, combine crumbled bacon with blue cheese, chopped green onions, and a little cream cheese.
    • Fill the mushroom caps with the mixture and bake until the cheese is melted and slightly browned.

  • Mediterranean Style
    • Mix feta cheese, chopped Kalamata olives, sun-dried tomatoes, chopped fresh basil, and bread crumbs.
    • Stuff the mushrooms with the mixture and bake until the cheese is soft and the breadcrumbs are golden.
  • Crab-Stuffed Mushrooms
    • Sauté finely diced onions and garlic in butter until translucent.
    • In a bowl, combine sautéed onions and garlic with lump crab meat, cream cheese, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, and chopped fresh parsley.
    • Fill the mushroom caps with the crab breadcrumb mixture and bake until the tops are golden and the filling is heated through.

Storing Leftover Air Fryer Stuffed Mushrooms

If you happen to have leftovers, store them in an airtight container for 3-4 days. Be careful, they go quickly!

Can You Freeze Cream Cheese Stuffed Mushrooms

Everyone wants to know, “Can you freeze stuffed mushrooms before baking?” Yes! Stuffed mushrooms can be frozen, but I recommend freezing them before cooking for the best quality.

Store them uncooked in an air-tight Tupperware or ziplock bag in the freezer for up to 3 months.

To cook them after freezing, do not thaw them first. This can create soggy mushrooms. Instead, add them to a preheated air fryer basket while they’re still frozen.

Oh yes!! These were the best ever! I slipped a wee square of ham in as well since I had some but I’m certain they would have been wonderful without it. Thank you.

Awesome. They cooked perfectly in 10 minutes. I added some bacon crumbles to the cream cheese mixture and used dried chives as I did not have any fresh ones.

Can you make these ahead of time and reheat in the microwave?

    • Easy Air Fryer Stuffed Mushrooms (25)Tiffany says

Yes, the stuffed mushrooms can be made ahead of time. I recommend cooking them in the air fryer within 24 hours of preparing them. Cover them with plastic wrap or store them in Tupperware in the refrigerator until ready to cook.
They can be reheated in the microwave. We love leftover stuffed mushrooms!
      Enjoy!

Can these be made with portobello mushrooms?

Yes, portobello mushrooms should work. I have not personally used portobello in this recipe. It may just need additional cook time.

I have made these once and they were amazing! I plan on making them again but would like to do them in the oven. My air fryer is small and I plan on making them for a cookout so I would like to do a full batch all at once. What temp and for how long do you recommend for the oven

      Hi Rebecca,
I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed them!
When I bake them in the oven I set the temperature to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and cook for 10-12 minutes. I’ve always been a bit surprised by recipes that recommend 20 minutes at this temperature because I find they’re done way before then, but it may vary on the size of mushrooms you have. I look for the liquid juices starting to come out onto the pan and check them for tenderness by piercing one with a fork.
Let me know how they turn out for you!
