Dynasty Draft Primer: AFC South (2024 Fantasy Football) (2024)

The storylines in the AFC South are interesting as we enter the 2024 season. The Texans added talent, the same with the Titans, the Colts see the return of their franchise quarterback and the Jaguars are only a year off from their division title. The moves from each team had huge impacts in dynasty, so we broke it down and looked at who are the people to look for. Here is our dynasty draft primer for the AFC South.

Tennessee Titans

The Titans made a lot of moves during the offseason to try to reinvent the team, but the key pieces that led them to division titles are gone. Will Levis took over at quarterback midway through the season when Ryan Tannehill was injured. He had an excellent debut finishing at QB6 that week but had just one top-15 finish for the rest of their season. He’s the dynasty QB23, but with this new offense, new coaching staff and third-easiest strength of schedule, he could be someone to stash to see how he starts the year.

One of the best players in Titans history is Derrick Henry. Although he was still highly productive, Tennessee felt comfortable moving on because of Tyjae Spears, who put up some impressive numbers in his rookie season. Currently sitting at the supreme value of dynasty RB26 in this offense, with his dual-threat ability, he has a chance to finish inside the top 15, even with Tony Pollard on this roster.

Their biggest signing came at wide receiver, where they stole Calvin Ridley from division rivals Jacksonville. Levis will have an excellent receiver corps with Ridley, DeAndre Hopkins, former two-time 1,000+ yard receiver Tyler Boydand former first-round pick Treylon Burks. Boyd could see a lot of work as a slot receiver, but Burks will either be buried or might be a trade option. Ridley at WR44 and Hopkins at WR54 should exceed those values.

Houston Texans

How much further can the Texans ascend?

They went from being one of the worst teams in football to a division winner who also won a playoff game.

The Texans found their franchise quarterback. C.J. Stroud was an easy pick to be the Offensive Rookie of the Year and was QB5 from Weeks 1-13 before an injury forced him to miss two games. You’re seeing how the Texans put the pieces around him and are planning for the future, and that’s why he is one of the top quarterbacks to have in a dynasty.

Nico Collins isn’t going anywhere after Houston gave him a large extension. He was one of the best receivers after Tank Dell‘s injury at WR5 from Weeks 13-18. Currently ranked as the dynasty WR20, you’ll likely have to pay a hefty price to obtain him because of that extension. Dell isn’t much further down at WR23 and might be the one to consider if you can get a better deal. He had three top-10 finishes last year. If you remember, Stroud told Houston management he wanted them to draft Dell. Was Diggs’ regression last year a trend or an outliner? There were rumors of him being unhappy in Buffalo, and we might see better productivity this year, but he’s likely the third option.

In Year 3, Dameon Pierce‘s stock is plummeting. After an excellent rookie year, his production dropped from 4.3 yards per carry to 2.9. As the season progressed, we saw his snap share drop from 45% or better in five straight to 20% or lower in seven of his final eight. They didn’t re-sign Devin Singletary and traded for Joe Mixon. Mixon’s career has been up and down, but he would be the more valuable player in this backfield as Houston has fallen out of love with Pierce.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts have begun to build something with the pieces they have.

They brought in Anthony Richardson to be the next franchise quarterback, and although we only saw a brief glimpse, it showed promise. He recorded 5.4 yards per carry, the second-highest amongst quarterbacks with 50+ rushing attempts. The Colts want him to use his legs. Even when playing only parts of four games, he still had the 11th-most designed run plays (16), which comprised 9.8% of his snaps. That’s more than Jalen Hurts (9.4%), Lamar Jackson (7.3%) and Josh Allen (4.9%). The dynasty community is already aware of his potential as he is the QB7. If he puts together the complete package he would be great to have.

He’s got a great complement of receivers the Colts invested in. They made sure Michael Pittman Jr. didn’t go anywhere as they signed him to a big contract. If Richardson can establish a connection with him, Pittman will be a valuable pick in dynasty at WR17. Another receiver that might be worth looking at is Adonai Mitchell. Indianapolis drafted him in the second round and his explosiveness bursts off the tape. He also has the athleticism to make big plays as an over-the-top pass-catcher. He is someone to look for in drafts or try to trade for.

This doesn’t mean they won’t run the ball. Jonathan Taylor is one of the top running backs in the league and is the dynasty RB5. As long as he’s healthy, he’s in line for 200 carries.

Jacksonville Jaguars

After the Jaguars made it to the divisional round in 2022, 2023 was a down year. They finished 9-8 and missed the playoffs.

It’s an interesting year for Trevor Lawrence. He’s entering Year 4 of his rookie contract, and while they have picked up his fifth-year option, we haven’t heard anything about Jacksonville signing him to a long-term deal. That’s because he’s been inconsistent; during his rookie season, he understandably struggled, which had a lot to do with the turmoil of Urban Meyer as the coach. His sophom*ore season was excellent under Doug Pederson, and we thought he was ready to become a valuable fantasy quarterback, but he dipped last year. While he wasn’t as bad as his rookie season, he still took a step back. Investing in him in dynasty would be tough, as you don’t know his situation.

Regarding receiving options, Christian Kirk will be the WR1 like he was in 2022, as Calvin Ridley is one and done in Duval, but in terms of looking at a Jaguars pass-catcher, Evan Engram is the one to look at. Currently ranked as the dynasty TE11, he has been fantastic in Jacksonville and finished as the TE2 last year and TE5 in 2022.

The ground game held the most value as Travis Etienne finished as the RB3. That’s great for being on a team ranked 24th in run-play percentage (40.6%). He’s currently the dynasty RB6. Even though Pederson has said he would get Tank Bigsby more carries, Etienne should still have another top-five finish in 2024.
